Melisa Wheatley – Principal

Melisa is more familiar with small business than most, holding the tape measure at a young age for her father, a carpenter, and now as an experienced business advisor for him and many other clients.

As a principal of Martel Wheatley, Melisa provides services to her clients including business valuations, structuring advice, budgeting, reviews of internal systems to ensure maximum efficiency, payroll obligations and general business management advice.

She can take complicated technical issues and translate them to useful, easy to understand terms. This means busy clients in trades, retail, professional and services get a no-nonsense interpretation of business issues facing them and appreciate her ability for de-mystifying financial jargon.

Melisa has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from Charles Sturt University and is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) and affiliate of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CAANZ) with over 20 years accounting experience.

Melisa is an expert in accounting, taxation compliance, Self Managed Super Funds and online management systems. She recognises efficiencies in cloud based accounting and often consults with businesses to ensure their systems are as automated as practical.

Personal: Melisa enjoys spending time with her young family and travelling around in their caravan.


Sam Martel – Principal

Sam is a genuine business advisor to our clients, large and small. He enjoys sharing ideas with clients and creating strategies to help them grow and manage their business.

Sam is a Chartered Accountant (CA), and holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics with Honors (B.Ag. Ec. (Hons)).

Before returning to Dubbo in 2011 Sam worked in Sydney with KPMG’s middle market advisory division and then Chapman Eastway.

Sam’s diverse client base includes graziers, irrigation and dry land farmers, medical specialists, engineers, trades and aged care.

Sam is a technically strong tax practitioner and an independent thinker. He is able to analyse complicated taxation matters and then create solutions to the benefit of his clients.

He enjoys assisting clients with business development. He has a proven capability to create accurate cashflow forecasts and strategies to support clients reach their goals. This is appreciated by clients looking to make large asset acquisitions, reviewing finance arrangements, planning a succession or appraising business performance.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Agricultural Economics (Hon.)

Personal: Sam and his wife Jacqui have two young daughters. After years of playing rugby (he has a cauliflower ear to prove it) Sam now enjoys playing mixed touch football and hobby farming.  


Hugh S Martel – Associate

Hugh prides himself in providing clients with personal attention, be it a strategic overview of their business or their new business proposal,financial planning, succession planning or tax planning.

Hugh has practiced as a public accountant since 1985 helping individuals and businesses. His experience also includes commercial accounting and farming operations as well as taxation and the effective operation of partnerships, companies and trusts.

A major part of Hugh's role is advising family business owners in a confidant’s role. Hugh likes to take a long term view when working with clients to help them achieve their goals.

In 2016 Hugh stepped back from a principal’s role in public accounting to an associate status with Martel Wheatley. His goal is to devote more time to clients’ succession matters. 

Hugh is keen to see that the outcome of an inter-generational transfer of the farm business of the retiring generation always has enough financial strength for them to make independent decisions in their retirement years.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Financial Admin.

Matthew Bruntflett – Accountant

Matt has worked in the accounting industry since 2011 whilst undertaking his joint degree in accounting and legal studies.

Matt has extensive experience in Self Managed Superannuation Fund compliance along with MYOB software support, taxation services and GST compliance. 

Qualifications: Bachelor of Business (Accounting/Legal Studies)

Memberships: Provision Member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand

Personal: Outside of work Matt enjoys Judo, camping and spending time with friends and family.

Rebecca Pryor - Cadet Accountant

Rebecca started with Martel Wheatley in September 2016. Rebecca grew up on a farm south west of Gunnedah.

Rebecca supports the principals and other accountants in assisting with the preparation and completion of client engagements. Rebecca enjoys the weekly professional development meetings which enhance her learning.

Qualifications: Certificate 3 in Business Administration

Personal: In Rebecca's spare time she loves traveling to Sydney with her friends to catch the latest in music.

Jayde Fishpool - Support

Jayde is the first point of contact with Martel Wheatley.

Jayde was born and raised in Tottenham, on a cropping and sheep farm.

In her spare time, Jayde loves to spend time back on the farm with her family, and socialising with her friends.

Mitchell Ryan - Cadet Accountant

Mitchell is the newest Cadet Accountant here at Martel Wheatley. Mitchell was born and raised in Dubbo. From a young age he enjoyed mathematics and problem solving.

Mitchell completed his HSC in 2016 at Dubbo College Senior Campus and intends to start university though distance education in the New Year.

Mitchell values spending time with his family and friends. He enjoys camping and travelling to Sydney whenever he can to see old friends.
